A 30-Day Starter Journal for Women Over 50

Faith, Hot Flashes, "Holy Worry" & Two Pups

Trading Anxiety for Trust in HIM — One Morning at a Time

Anxiety and I are old roommates. The 3 a.m. ceiling stare. The spiral that turns one worry into a full catastrophe by sunrise. The open fridge at midnight. The voice that whispers too old, too late, not enough. If that sounds like you, sister — pull up a chair. I wrote this for you.

What’s inside

A starter journal — made for beginners. We start small.

Faith, Hot Flashes, “Holy Worry” & Two Pups is a 30-day starter guided faith journal for women over 50 — a gentle first step into journaling with God, and trading anxiety for trust one morning at a time. Never kept a journal, or never stuck with one? This is built for exactly that.

It’s a daily war, this anxiety thing — but through journaling, and with God, I’m winning more battles every day. You don’t fight it alone, and you don’t fight it on willpower — you fight it one trusting morning at a time, with the One who has never left you.

This is anxiety, menopause, and two freeloading rescue pups — told raw and honest, and funny enough to keep you from crying. (Sometimes a holy giggle is the only thing that does.)

Week 1 — The Page Will Try to Beat You. Don’t Let It.
Week 2 — My Daily Date with God. Best Date EVER!
Week 3 — Hot Flashes and Why Am I ALWAYS so Hungry?
Week 4 — My Pups. Unemployed and Unstoppable. Plus a Deb (another woman who forgot why she walked into the room).

What you get

  • 30 days, 4 weeks. A short, doable path — not a mountain. We already have so much stuff spinning in our heads — this quiets it.
  • A scripture and one true thought a day — Berean Standard Bible — starting Day 1 with Isaiah 41:10.
  • A note from me and the pups. Honest, real, some days messy, some days hilarious. You’re not alone in it.
  • Four spaces to journal, every day. The Good Stuff, Pour It Out, Into His Hands, and People to Pray For. No rules — don’t fill every line.
  • End-of-week wins. A page to catch what anxiety makes you miss — the things you actually got right. (Stopped at only half a family-size cheesecake? Hey — it counts.)
  • The whole crew — and real support. Heidi & Bella are in it with you the whole way, plus a Deb. You need support. Trust me.

Then the tornado hit — menopause. It didn’t show up next to the anxiety; it poured gasoline on it. A full-time job I didn’t apply for and can’t quit.
Serenity now!

Meet My Army — The Pups

Heidi Elizabeth and Bella Blue are my generals. They go to battle with me every day. They’ve lived this battle with me, every second. The heart of this journal, the rescue crew who rebuilt right alongside me. Supervised by rescue dogs who actually know anxiety. This is our field of expertise.

“Okay, girls — suit up. The enemy’s at the gate, and we are going to fight this battle.”

“This is the good part. She stops spinning. We all breathe.”

“She rebuilt at 50-something. We rebuilt with her.”

My story

I’m sharing my heart, rawness, and what is working for me — hoping it works for you too. We start small.

Reinvent yourself after 50? Heck Yes!!! In March 2026 I got laid off. The kind of blow that could’ve flattened me. Instead I got on my knees before HIM, then I got to work: I learned AI from scratch and built my own marketing agency, Mary Brand Experiences. I rose from the ashes like a Phoenix — a very tired, occasionally anxious Phoenix who still eats chocolate for dinner when the decision fatigue hits, but a Phoenix nonetheless.

I won’t sugarcoat it. I’ve walked through incredible battles — traumas that brought me to my knees. But that’s exactly where I found HIS peace: on my knees, pen in hand, journaling my way back to Him and to peace.

Two and a half years ago I started a journal. Something completely shifted. The more I wrote, the more my relationship with God grew — and the stronger I got. I used to think I had to wait for the anxiety to quiet down before I could hear God. Journaling taught me the exact opposite. My pups rebuilt with me — and this journal is what came out of those mornings.

What one morning with HIM can do

Yesterday — Anxiety took me down

Unemployed, and an unexpected $1,300 vet bill. Labs for both pups, Bella with an ear infection, and anxiety through the roof at the clinic. It fed my anxiety, too — I was praying through it, I got home, BUT a panic attack hit hard. I crashed and slept it off, but I did my night journaling and surrendered my crappy day.

Today — God crushed the anxiety

I woke up with worship songs in my head. I journaled, connected with God, and thanked Him. And I am NOT kidding — ZERO. Zero residue from yesterday. Gone! He has me — no question in my mind.

That’s what journaling does: it builds a strength that makes no sense. My Daily Date with God, every single morning. It’s life-changing.

About the Author

Mary Ruiz is a marketing and events professional who rebuilt her career — and her peace — after 50. Laid off and starting over, she kept showing up to journal and be present in her Daily Date with God every morning, with her coffee, her Coke Zero, her faith, and two rescue pups. She writes from the trenches — but she shares the triumphs too.

Get your Deb

There’s a whole section of this journal about Deb — because getting out of isolation is half the battle.

We met at church. When she found out I was unemployed, she handed me a house-and-pup-sitting gig at her home — big, beautiful, zen, the kind of place you go to rest. We share meals. We went white water rafting. She pulled me out of hiding when the anxiety wanted me alone. Everyone needs a Deb, especially when you are going through anxiety.

We laugh. We share anxiety, a love for dogs, and a love for the Lord. We both have ADD, so a conversation starts, takes a hard left — we travel the world, go back to our childhood, a cute top we saw, divorce, recipes, family — and two hours later we come back to where we started. I love it — no judgment, just laughing about this beautiful life God gave us.

Deb read it first

When Mary came up with this journal, I thought it was a fantastic idea — for someone else. I detest putting pen to page (arthritis fingers, the burden of an empty page, and handwriting I can’t even read myself). And what if my grandkids read it one day and realize what a crazy, menopausal nut I am??

Then I read it…

I laughed and I cried (not just because she said some awfully nice things about me), but because I recognized myself in the loving, funny words my beautiful friend wrote. Standing in front of the open fridge at 1 a.m.? Check. Frustrated by humans, but my nutty dogs can do no wrong? Check. Hot flashes and crankiness in this season of life? Ugh. Also Check.

What I loved was the simplicity and the humor. For the first time, journaling felt doable — not another “should,” but something I GET to do because it makes me feel better — like hugs, or petting my dogs, or prayer. Pull up a chair and your favorite pen, put your worries on paper, and let them go.

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
